Zooming

AveDesk 1.1 is the successor of AveDesk 1.0 which was launched in January 2004. After 6 months of hard work, a new version of AveDesk was born. Keeping the feel of the application the same, much has been improved.
Graphical Improvements
Dropshadows are now looking better than ever. Real time created shadows of your icons is available to you with a wide range of options to set for the actual dropshadow. With one click, you easily give your favourite desklets a pretty dropshadow.
Colorizing is a totally new feature. Where AveDesk 1.0 only had an option to grayscale a desklet, AveDesk 1.1 offers to modify both the saturation and the hue of any desklet. You can quickly make all your icons match one color-scheme.
Desklets can and will easily do nice animations. For example, when you are preparing to drop a bunch of files on a folder desklet, the folder will morph from an closed folder icon into an opened one, indicating to the user that the files can be dropped onto the desklet.
Another addition is that hidden labels will fade in and out on mouse over, making it more pleasant to look at.
With a good looking dropshadow under your icon, the labels text couldn't stay at the old shadow: Labels now have highly tweakable dropshadows, which will give numerous possibilities for the label to look.
Another option is to make the label be in 'Top Down'-style, which is handy for Asian characters.

Better Functionality
AveDesk 1.1 will come with a default set of highly usuable desklets: For every type of shortcut, there is a special, optimized desklet. There is a regular , a folder and a drive -shortcut. Each type of shortcut will show different information and act differently. The regular shorcut can show a preview of image files it points to for example, while a drive shortcut has the possibility to be hidden when the drive is not mounted.
The notes desklet is another nifty widget that comes with AveDesk 1.1. It will allow you to quickly make little notes all over your desktop. Simply drop text on it and drag it into a document to quickly access the notes texts. If there is more text on the note than can be showed, the text will automatically scroll when you hoover the mousecursor over it.
To make it look like a real stickie - you know, those you put on your fridge-, there are a lot of options available like rotate text or a bounding rectangle for the text.
Besides those 4 handy desklets, AveDesk 1.1 will feature enough other desklets to have fun with, to make your desktop look pretty and to boost your productivity.
All desklets are interact better with each other too. With the addition of full drag-'n-drop ( desklets can accept all kinds of drops and are able to be dragged), removing a certain desklet is just as simple as dragging it to a Trash desklet and dropping it: voilá, it's gone.
More Information
While the regular labels also give a lot of information, AveDesk 1.1 has seperated the available information. Besides the interactive icon of each desklet, every label will now be seperated into two parts: The caption and a sublabel.
While the caption can totally be defined by the user, the sublabel will show extra information under the caption. A drive desklet will show the amount of free space left on the particular drive and a shortcut desklet will show additional information about the file it points to.
This additional information in the sublabel is configurable by the user or can simply turned off with one click.

Effects
Something totally new to the concept of AveDesk is the effect. Effects do cool things to your desktop. The Shake Effect will make your desklets shake on mouseover, the glow effect will give your icons a nice pulsing glow. The possibilities are endless.

What is bzip2?
bzip2 is a freely available, patent free (see below), high-quality data compressor. It typically compresses files to within 10% to 15% of the best available techniques (the PPM family of statistical compressors), whilst being around twice as fast at compression and six times faster at decompression.
The current version is 1.0.5, released 17 March 2008.
Version 1.0.5 removes a potential security vulnerability (CERT-FI 20469 as it applies to bzip2) in versions 1.0.4 and earlier, so all users are recommended to upgrade immediately.
Why would I want to use it?
* Because it compresses well. So it packs more stuff into your overfull disk drives, distribution CDs, backup tapes, USB sticks, etc. And/or it reduces your customer download times, long distance network traffic, etc. It's not the world's fastest compressor, but it's still fast enough to be very useful.
* Because it's open-source (BSD-style license), and, as far as I know, patent-free. (To the best of my knowledge. I can't afford to do a full patent search, so I can't guarantee this. Caveat emptor). So you can use it for whatever you like. Naturally, the source code is part of the distribution.
* Because it supports (limited) recovery from media errors. If you are trying to restore compressed data from a backup tape or disk, and that data contains some errors, bzip2 may still be able to decompress those parts of the file which are undamaged.
* Because you already know how to use it. bzip2's command line flags are similar to those of GNU Gzip, so if you know how to use gzip, you know how to use bzip2.
* Because it's very portable. It should run on any 32 or 64-bit machine with an ANSI C compiler. The distribution should compile unmodified on Unix and Win32 systems. Earlier versions have been ported with little difficulty to a large number of weird and wonderful systems.
* Because (by now, late 2007) everybody else uses it too.
The code is organised as a library with a programming interface. The bzip2 program itself is a client of the library. You can use the library in your own programs, to directly read and write .bz2 files, or even just to compress data in memory using the bzip2 algorithms.

Overview: GFD was written primarily to get captured television broadcasts comfortably into a DVD conform format. Naturally you can use the program also for MPG videos of other origins, however no typical functions for copying DVDs (e.g. ripp, transcode...) are contained. To burn the final DVD use your favorite burning program, or simply that one, that was included with the DVD burner. GFD provides only the necessary VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders (as well as the VOB and IFO files). These can be burned with any DVD - burn program (UDF - ISO format). Problems with stand alone DVD players have occurred very rarely so far, however I can't give you a warranty. Since version 0.82 it is possible to burn also from GFD itself if Nero (version 5.5 or higher) is installed. Since version 0.99.2 also Imgburn is supported.
I tried to simplify the creation process for two typical cases as much as possible:
1. One titleset with homogeneous movies (concerning resolution, aspect...) as one has it e.g. with series. Here only one main menu with a selection of the films is provided, without own chapter menus (chapter marks may be used nevertheless).
2. Two (or more) titlesets with potentially different characteristics (concerning resolution, aspect...) per film. Here each film is put in its own titleset, where a chapter menu can be created (multi VTS DVD).
The program uses predominantly a drag & drop philosophy: Films (thus video streams), as well as chapters (in the titleset menus) are pulled on the menu background and can be positioned by drag with the left mouse button. With the right mouse button you may change some characteristics (font size, typeface, colors). Only the last added film can be deleted again = stack principle. The entire structure is shown in the "explorer view" window. As background picture for the menus the file default.jpg from the GFD directory is used by default. You may overwrite this file with any own JPG file.
The whole program is pixel-oriented, therefore the window has a fixed size of 1000 x 700 pixels. In the SOURCE window you can start a preview of the video with a double click, here you can also create screen shots to be used as pictures in the menus. The preview is based on the Windows Media Player, therefore all restrictions are accordingly. In particular the time indicator is not correct (specially for elementary streams). The program accepts elementary streams (these are multiplexed with mplex during the final creation of the DVD) or ready multiplexed streams, however the streams have to be multiplexed with mplex and the - f 8 option, otherwise they will not be accepted by dvdauthor.
Since version 0.99.2 it is possible to use MuxMan to create a DVD. MuxMan accepts elementary streams in DVD compliant resolution only. But it is faster in this case. If dvdauthor or MuxMan should be used has to be set up before any video is imported.
The program creates batch files for all single steps, these may be edited and then started "by hand" in a DOS window (Create batch) otherwise these batch files are started from GFD itself (Create DVD). The messages from dvdauthor, spumux... are shown in a log window and also saved to a log file. If you like to know more about the syntax of the XML instruction files, have a look to the dvdauthor manual and doku or the MuxMan documentation on the mpucoder page respectively.

Advantages of Disk-At-Once (DAO) Recording
Recording in disk-at-once mode writes the complete disc, i.e. lead-in, one or more tracks and lead-out, in a single step. The commonly used track-at-once (TAO) mode writes each track independently which requires link blocks between two tracks. Older CD-recorder models forced a two second pause (pre-gap) between two tracks whereas newer models allow adjusting of the pause length in TAO mode reducing the number of link blocks to a minimal amount. However, with TAO it is generally not possible to define the data that is written in pre-gaps. But exactly this feature makes audio CD recording interesting, e.g. by creating hidden bonus tracks or track intros in pre-gaps like it is common habit on commercial CDs.
Finally, DAO recording is the only way to write data to the unused R-W sub-channels for e.g. CD-G or CD-TEXT.
